Leadership & Professional Development

CSW supports new faculty as they transition into the school's academic program and community. New teachers meet regularly with the Dean of Faculty, their department heads, and their mentors who are veteran CSW teachers. In their mentoring relationships, new faculty have discussed pedagogy, curriculum planning, student issues, and class observations. Mentors support new faculty through the New Teacher Review Process. New teachers are also encouraged to visit their colleague's classes.

Faculty and staff have multiple opportunities for leadership and voice at all levels of the institution. Faculty members serve as members of the advisory board, representatives on the administrative council, and as voting members of the Board of Trustees. Faculty members also have the opportunity to serve on various committees related to hiring, equity, technology, etc.

Professional development funds help support conferences, workshops, and other growth opportunities. Members of our faculty and staff regularly participate in the Diversity Directions Independent School Seminar, the People of Color Conference as well as conferences sponsored by The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS). In the past two years, CSW faculty have presented at or attended the following workshops and/or conferences related to STEM, learning and the brain, technology integration, ethnomusicology, academic feedback, master scheduling, and other topics. In addition, CSW professional development funding has provided support for faculty to pursue training in Critical Friends Groups and additional foreign languages. With professional development funding, some faculty have traveled internationally to develop courses that take place outside of the United States.

All full-time faculty members are part of an interdepartmental professional learning community, some of which use Critical Friends protocols. In small groups, educators are able to discuss professional dilemmas that affect student learning, closely examine student work, and consistently reflect on their practice. CSW faculty and members can choose to participate in a SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) seminar based on campus.

Long-time faculty are also eligible for a paid sabbatical for the duration of one Mod. During their sabbaticals, faculty have taken time to travel, to write, to paint, or to pursue lifelong passions.
