Jane's Pocket Change: A Little Fall Outing

Earlier this week I enjoyed a couple of days on the road visiting two progressive elementary schools and several CSW graduates.
Earlier this week I enjoyed a couple of days on the road visiting two progressive elementary schools and several CSW graduates.

These little trips keep The Cambridge School of Weston’s message out there and also add, quite beautifully, to the cache of stories I can draw on as I meet with the many CSW constituencies.

At the Unquowa School, one of our Progressive Education Lab partners, I heard the stunning voices of young people preparing to sing at a ribbon-cutting ceremony the next day. Unquowa has renovated a number of its art spaces to create room for dance and a professional-level stage. There was enormous energy in the air! Afterward I was able to lunch with Samson Egilman ’07 and his mixed group of lunch companions—from kindergarten through fourth grade. Samson is currently teaching second grade at Unquowa and is a graduate of the PEL program.

Earlier that morning I met with Charis Cooper ’90 whose two boys attend Unquowa. Charis recently made the move from Brooklyn, New York to Connecticut with her family. We talked about the new Health and Fitness Center and she described the motley crew of girls that formed her winning CSW soccer team—and she asked after Warren Carberg and Rhona Carlton Foss. Samson and Charis are hoping to bring together more CSW grads living in Connecticut.

The first visit of the trip was to Robert Scheuer ’41. A loyal supporter of our school, for many years he has regularly attended our NYC gatherings. Bob cares deeply about preparing young people for the world—an internationalist, he travelled early to China and Russia and understands a great deal about economic development in these countries and their relationship with the U.S.

Thanks to everyone with whom I met—and to my colleague Claudia Mahan who did all the driving! CSW road stories are the best!
