Jane's Pocket Change: Friends for Life

I was honored this past Sunday to join a few members of the Class of 1954 as they gathered together to remember their dear friend and classmate, Conrad White ‘54, who passed away earlier this year.
I was honored this past Sunday to join a few members of the Class of 1954 as they gathered together to remember their dear friend and classmate, Conrad White ‘54, who passed away earlier this year.

As we sat on the back porch of our host's home, with iced tea and sandwiches, the stories came -- and you know I love the stories. Like the one about ordering ice cream to be delivered to the dorm by a cab and hauling up the goods to the upper floor in a basket after sending down the money in the same basket  (it gives a whole new meaning to “ordering on-line.”) Or the one about getting in trouble for sitting on the roof of White Farm eating ice cream (different group, different time). And the one about going to a cotillion in Salem. (Who even knows what a cotillion is these days? It's a social gathering during the season when young women called débutantes are “presented” to society.) Connie, as a good friend to many in his class, was part of many of these events.

As we head towards our June 10 graduation, I think of the ways that our current seniors, soon to become graduates, will be friends for life. Not all of them, of course, but so many having shared these four years together (70% of this class arrived at CSW as 9th graders) will stay in touch and reminisce about their equivalent of the ice cream stories. Beautiful, wonderful stuff.
