Jane's Pocket Change: End of A Year

There’s no official CSW countdown at the end of a calendar year as there is at the end of an academic year, but the signs are all around us.
There’s no official CSW countdown at the end of a calendar year as there is at the end of an academic year, but the signs are all around us.

Seniors applying early decision have their news; I found a beautiful piece of art (thanks Amanda Poorvu ’15) for the holiday card; Tom Evans and Sherrill Bounnell are working frantically with a cast of hundreds to prepare for our annual Evening of the Arts. 2014 is coming to a close.

It’s been crazy-busy but grand. Our faculty and staff are working hard on the process for the re-accreditation with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; we are reviewing the excellent recommendations made in the Diversity and Inclusion Report and the board of trustees is working to make our vision of a new health and fitness center a reality.

Our students continue to offer ways for us to process and discuss not only how we feel about the tragic events involving Michael Brown, the city of Ferguson and Eric Garner—and other equally devastating examples. Keeping the discussion alive, especially at a time when we are all supposed to feel happy and do a lot of shopping is a big step, but just one step. Looking for action and solutions are the next steps; and they can be taken by strong individuals committed to the kind of change it might take to become a post-racial society.

Here’s to the good and the difficult of 2014; and here’s to the privilege of sharing it within this vibrant, creative and empathetic community. Thanks, CSW. Enjoy the break from school, but find the opportunity to continue to engage with the world.
