Jane's Pocket Change: Making Change for the Better

Last week I enjoyed a road trip to the Carolinas and Washington, D.C. Sharing CSW's story in the world with our alumni/ae is so important--and hearing back from them about what they do keeps us connected. Engaging our graduates in the life of CSW is a major school agenda.
Last week I enjoyed a road trip to the Carolinas and Washington, D.C. Sharing CSW's story in the world with our alumni/ae is so important--and hearing back from them about what they do keeps us connected. Engaging our graduates in the life of CSW is a major school agenda.

This was a fantastic few days where I realized once again how brilliant CSW grads are at putting their learning into action. Lunch with Billy Keyserling '67 at the Low Country Provision Store in Beaufort, SC, where he has been mayor since 2008 was not only a gourmet meal (homemade gumbo) but a beautiful account of Billy's life from CSW to local government in SC. Billy recounted how he directs council meetings with the purpose of building consensus through focused conversations rather than voting; he talked about his love of working with high school-aged students and helping them find ways to make change. When young people share their dismay with them, especially about recent events that seem to indicate we are a racist society, unable to change, he points out the radical changes in GLBTQ civil rights issues that have happened over the past 10 years. Billy is an optimist--and a true CSW alumnus.

We also met with David Stern '78 executive director of Equal Justice Works. "Founded in 1986 as the National Association for Public Interest Law (NAPIL), the organization works with law schools, law firms, corporate legal departments and nonprofit organizations to provide the training and skills that enable attorneys to provide legal assistance to the poor and other vulnerable populations." (Wikipedia) Like Billy, David is an open-minded, enormously optimistic man. And also like Billy, he credits CSW with so much about who he is.

There are many other narratives I can recount about how our graduates take action in the world. I thank them all for what they do and for staying part of our CSW arena.
