Jane's Pocket Change: Dodgeball Delight

Again this year our student peer mentors, under the inspirational spirit of Sam Hoenig ’15, opened up the possibility for some real wintertime fun during the recent lunchtimes.
Again this year our student peer mentors, under the inspirational spirit of Sam Hoenig ’15, opened up the possibility for some real wintertime fun during the recent lunchtimes.

I just returned from the exciting final dodgeball matches where Roshni (named for Roshni Madhu-Sudan ’16 and basically the AP Calculus class, including teacher, Marvin Gutierrez) won. Their rivals “BumSquad” put up a valiant effort. Will Kwiatkowski ‘15 wrote a fabulous piece for us that popped in my email box this week:

In the first series of the Semifinals, Don't Stop Ballieving faced off against Bum Squad. Coming off their upset of the reigning champion Dodgefathers, they were looking to continue their run as they faced Will Blumenthal ‘16 and his squad. Don't Stop had just come off a 6-0 blowout of Trap House in the Quarterfinals and looked like a powerhouse heading into the Semis. Bum Squad won the first game 4-0 thanks to some stellar athleticism and dodging that left Don't Stop helpless as they failed to record more than two hits. They didn't stop there as they eliminated Don't Stop Ballieving in Game 2 by a score of 5-0. In the second match, Roshni faced the Slumdodge Millionaires.

In the previous round, Roshni took down Daddy in a miracle overtime win led by Will Kwiatkowski and Joey Boots-Ebenfield ‘15 that launched them to the Semifinals. Slumdodge Millionaires wrapped up the second round by eliminating Kevin in the Kids after an intense one-on-one in overtime where Aiden Kolodziej ‘17 took down teacher Kevin Smith to win the match. Teacher Marvin Gutierrez looks to overcome his team's defeat in the Finals last year and win a spot on the plaque of Dodgeball Champions. The first match came to an end as Roshni let the clock run out while holding a 5-1 lead over Slumdodge. Roshni's resilience proved to be the winning factor after their captain got hit in the foot and stayed on the sideline for the rest of Game 1. They managed to stay composed and take down the remaining players, thanks mostly to a catch by Sophie Hess ‘15 that shifted the momentum for good onto Roshni's side. The second round ended more lopsided than the first as Sophie got the knockout blow to advance to the Finals.”

In the Bronze match between Don't Stop Ballieving and Slumdodge Millionaires, Don’t Stop Ballieving won, quietly but confidently.

What a great way to spend a lunch block and to strengthen community connectedness. Thanks to all involved in making this tournament happen.
And a special shout out to John Cohan, athletic department, who handled some tough moments as head referee.
