Jane's Pocket Change: Sharing History, Changing the World

I recently attended the annual Facing History New England dinner. Michael Patrick MacDonald, author of All Souls spoke about his journey living in the war zone of South Boston and Roxbury in the 1970s, growing up during the most turbulent time in recent Boston history.
I recently attended the annual Facing History New England dinner. Michael Patrick MacDonald, author of All Souls spoke about his journey living in the war zone of South Boston and Roxbury in the 1970s, growing up during the most turbulent time in recent Boston history.

He spoke of the common struggle of poor whites and blacks, the loss of lives and the difficulty people had speaking the truth about what was happening.

During the evening we heard many speakers connect the work of Facing History and the role of the upstanding citizen (“upstander”) across racial, religious and socio-economic lines. We heard about the importance of the story of what we all have in common.

MacDonald spoke of finding voice in order to find agency. The agency to act. His message was strong, and resonated with so many of the educators in the room.

As we witness the devastation of events in Nepal and the destruction of the Baltimore communities, listening to the powerful speakers tonight opened up a little hope.
