CSW Boys' Varsity Tennis Improves to 7-0 on the 2015 Season!

On April 29, 1937, the indispensable Virginia Woolf recorded part of a BBC radio broadcast entitled "Words Fail Me." Perhaps this sentiment captures the essence of the CSW Boys' Varsity Tennis team's most recent 5-0 victory, over venerable rival Brimmer and May.

In the previous tête-à-tête between the two foes, CSW eked out a 3-2 triumph. Wednesday, May 6th was a tennis match which featured the CSW playing perhaps their most well-rounded, exuberant tennis of the season. The Gryphons are currently the owner of a 7-0 record.

In Number One Singles, Sam "The Spinner" Hoenig '15 again resumed his previous dominance over Brimmer, skating past his rival, 8-2. Hoenig never conceded easy points, and treated all spectators and players alike to a lustrous exhibit of laser-like forehands and rapid-release backhands. Hoenig's triumph was true to form, and he appears well-poised to be considered as a finalist for the league Most Valuable Player honors.

In simply breathtaking, and painstaking fashion, freshman Leaf Fagerberg '18, playing Number 2 singles, yet again interjected his own flair for tennis drama, in his 8-7 mind-blowing, energy-sapping, always brilliant comeback triumph. Leaf, affectionately known as "The Dragon-Slayer," was trailing 2-7 in what appeared to be a convincing Brimmer victory. "The Dragon Slayer," undeterred by two match points (the tennis equivalent of lingering around the gallows too long) from a veteran senior from Brimmer and May, fought vociferously to break serve and bring the match to 3-7. Leaf was nearly stoic in every point that followed, displaying uncommon zen-like composure, and, indisputably refining his solid groundstrokes and springy serve. The 7-7 match drifted into an anti-climactic tiebreaker, with the freshman sensation decisively extinguishing all hope from his once dominant opponent from Brimmer and May, catapulting himself to a 7-2 final result in the tie-breaker.

In Number Three Singles, Sam "The Destroyer" Rueter '17, after trailing 0-2, and then 1-3, forged an impressive rebound of his own, notching seven consecutive game victories, en route to an emphatic 8-3 conquering of Brimmer and May. Sam continues to pulverize the tennis ball with smart and precise backhands. "The Destroyer" certainly lived up to the legend surrounding his moniker, smashing balls at will at the net, causing his opponent to wilt like a flower in a mid-July heat wave in Dasht-e Lut.

In Number One Doubles play, Nolan "The Mastermind" DeMott '16, and Josh "The Slugger" Rueter '17 continued their success in this tennis campaign, coming away victorious, by the final tally of 8-2. The youthful DeMott expended considerable time and effort throughout the day masterminding delicate drop shots, while Mr. Rueter seemed to respond to every accurately placed and powerful serve with poise and spot on precision with his return shots.

In Number Two Doubles, Chad "Rico Suave" Valpey '17 and Garrett "Zen" Stokes '16 relegated their foes from Brimmer into the defeat pile, launching themselves to a well earned 8-5 victory, clinching a CSW Boys' victory shutout of a wonderfully coached and well-disciplined team in Brimmer and May. Both Stokes and Valpey were brilliant in their deep overheads and control over net play and volleys. It was thrilling to see such comradeship amongst partners who have not collaborated together much this season.

The CSW Boys' continue their majestic season on Friday with a home match against Landmark (at the Gann Courts). We will see you on the courts!
