The English program approaches literature and writing from a variety of perspectives, focusing on themes and works drawn from different cultures and eras, including a rich collection of courses in American, British and world literature.

The sequence of analytical and creative writing courses challenges students to become enthusiastic writers and astute communicators. Writing and reading courses nurture both the written voice and rhetorical strategies so that students will see writing as a mode of self-expression and self-discovery. Students develop a wide portfolio of writing strategies, a clear sense of effective revision, and a deep appreciation for the power of language.

Nearly every English course includes vocabulary study, in-class writings, weekly papers, multiple draft revisions and nightly reading assignments.
