Diversity

CSW is a place where diversity of thought, action, background and approaches to problem-solving stand at the core of discourse and decision-making. The principles of equity and social justice are central to the fabric of school life and considered essential to sustaining a vibrant school community.

The school is committed to seeking out students and faculty of color. Students participate in the United Students of Color organization and have many opportunities to advocate and work for social and racial justice through a wide range of community service activities. In addition, many students join CSW's Diversity Committee, a student-led group that promotes the enrichment of the school culture through discussions, events and wide-ranging curricula.

For more than 15 years, CSW has sponsored Diversity Day where students and faculty share their experiences and engage in awareness exercises through a series of workshops, panels and guest speakers. Past Diversity Day programs have included a focus on Islam, a study of diversity within our own community and a multicultural film festival.

Did You Know?

In 2004, two CSW teachers traveled to California for an eight-day intensive Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED) training workshop. Upon their return, the two launched a year-long series of workshops for CSW faculty and staff, aimed at heightening racial and social awareness and instigating internal change. Eighteen CSW teachers and staff members participated in the workshops.

CSW Diversity Committee Goals

• Understand our own beliefs and the beliefs of others.

• Foster a community that is aware of its values as a whole and of the values of its members.

• Push ourselves beyond our comfort zones.

• Form connections between CSW and the greater world beyond our school.
