When the Girls Varsity basketball team beat Brimmer and May 44-36 on Friday night in the finals of the Independent Girls' Conference (IGC) tournament, it marked the second straight year a CSW basketball team has won a league championship. For the Lady Gryphons, it was the first since 1994.

The eloquent and haunting work exhibited in "Alfred DeCredico: Deconstructing Chaos," installed at the Thompson Gallery on The Cambridge School of Weston (CSW) campus, present viewers with densely networked surfaces. Decredico’s unframed drawings and paintings invite close scrutiny. The show, which runs from January 8 through March 12, 2010, is part of a yearlong series of exhibitions titled Contemporary Painting After a Century of Abstract Art.
Student Directors Workshop Performances
This Thursday and Friday, The Cambridge School of Weston Theatre Department presents three short, "heavenly" plays, directed by its very own students. These short pieces explore concepts such as the fate of a new life on earth, suspicion of child abuse in the Catholic Church and the perception of angels to a non-believer after death.

Eight years ago, Rachel Hirsch, history, joined an ensemble of faculty and students as they performed "Hamlet" in the first production of the CSW Shakespeare Ensemble. Initiated by former faculty member Lori Taylor, the two-mod class has become a staple end-of-year performance playground.

Every year the CSW theatre department wracks it brain to come up with a spring musical that speaks to the times and climate of the community and beyond. This year, it is no surprise, in a time of financial turmoil, that the faculty, Lisa Hirsch, theatre chair, Laura Backley and the late Robin Wood, chose lighter fare in Cole Porter's "Anything Goes."

Dr. Michael Fowlin, actor-psychologist, is returning to CSW for the second time on Thursday, April 16, when he brings his one-person show, "You Don't Know Me Until You Know Me," to CSW's Social Justice Day.
Gallery Exhibits 'The Uneven Terrain of America's History'

"The Uneven Terrain of America's History," the third and final art exhibition in a series exploring themes of social justice at CSW's Thompson Gallery, examines racism through the personal observations of artist, Randy Williams. The show opens March 30, and runs through June 15, with a reception on Thursday, April 9, from 4 to 7 p.m., and an evening lecture on Monday, May 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Children's Garden one of two schools highlighted

On Tuesday, March 10, the Children's Garden welcomed 11 educators from Turkey and the Netherlands, to tour the campus and gain insight on different methods of early childhood education. As one of two schools in the Boston area toured by the group, the Children's Garden was chosen because of its affiliation with the Reggio Emilia teaching philosophy.

As the Costa Rica/Panama trip comes to end, Steve Scrimshaw, science, reflects on the last leg of the trip.
"Most of the students are still visiting a local organic farm. The majority of the basic produce in Panama is grown in this region. It has very excellent volcanic soil and very predictable rainfall.

Eight students spent the last five weeks writing songs with unique chords, melodies and lyrics, inking them all down on a lead sheet, as part of CSW's pilot songwriting course taught by the music department's Gustavo Brasil and Michael Weinstein, music chair.

The girls' and boys' varsity basketball teams have been selected to participate in the NEPSAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) tournament this year.
CSW's Central American travelers are halfway through their course and moving onto their newest location. The duration of their overseas education will take place in a remote rainforest in Panama where they will study the ins and outs of flora and fauna.

Robin Benensohn-Rosefsky Wood, beloved theatre teacher at The Cambridge School of Weston since 1970 and chair of the department from 1976 until this fall, died Monday, February 23, 2009, at Massachusetts General Hospital surrounded by her family. She was 64 years old.

Sophie Weisskoff '10 was accepted to the Mass. Music Educator's Association (MMEA) All-State Chorus, performing March 28, at Symphony Hall in Boston.
In order to qualify for the All-State Chorus, Sophie was first accepted to the MMEA Eastern District Chorus, which performed on January 10, at the Boston Latin School.

As part of CSW's integrated studies program, Steve Scrimshaw, science, and Kaihla Olivar, foreign language, will embark on a 28-day journey to Costa Rica and Panama during Mod 5. The two teachers will accompany 15 students who will delve into scientific research and exploration, social justice initiatives, foreign language communication and self-discovery.

CSW is more than just a school, it is a community, and for some, a second home. Basketball coaches Robert DiBernardo, boys varsity, and Pat Ferdinand, girls varsity, believe the key to their teams' success is the family atmosphere that is created on and off the court.

With the largest group CSW has ever had, this year's Rock/Pop Ensemble is tackling a band as unique as the students who inhabit the school. Next week, during two performances, the group will perform ten songs from the albums OK Computer and The Bends as a tribute to the English alternative rock band, Radiohead.
At CSW, it is not uncommon for new courses to spring up organically. They often come about through a small group's desire to learn something, a club, or a group of students or faculty gathering informally during lunch or free periods.
"Tough Love" exhibit open until February 6

"Tough Love," the second of three art exhibitions exploring themes of social justice at CSW's Thompson Gallery, will be hosting a gallery talk and personal tour of the exhibit by Todd Bartel, gallery director, on Saturday, January 24.
CSW students Emily Brown '09 and Bayla Sheply '10, were featured on NECN for their involvement in City Year, an organization bringing young people together for a year of community service work in their area.

Seniors, Robertt Flores, Jong Won (Andy) Kim and Brandon Wright have organized a benefit concert, "Beats for a Cure," as part of Robertt's and Brandon's Capstone project, with all proceeds donated to FACE AIDS, a student campaign raising funds for Partners in Health.

The Children's Garden childcare center and preschool, nestled in the heart of The Cambridge School of Weston's (CSW) high school campus, is one of only a handful of Reggio Emilia schools in Massachusetts.

After days of rain, the clouds finally broke letting the warm sunshine through for the 27th Swirl-A-Thon at The Cambridge School of Weston (CSW) Summer Day Camp.
The Swirl-A-Thon, a human-made whirlpool generated by CSW campers swimming simultaneously in the same direction around the pool, is an annual fund-raising event that benefits children's charities. This summer, the fund-raising efforts will benefit Children's Hospital Boston.
