Fashion Show at End of Mod 5 Art Show

Amid clapping and warm words of encouragement, the CSW community showed its appreciation for the wearable art created during Mod 5.

Sashaying down the runway in fanciful numbers, the student artists showed off a wide selection of fashion statements artfully contrived using traditional, as well as non-traditional, sewing materials. Using an interesting mix of found materials and liberal amounts of imagination, the artists cooked up a range of delectable concoctions that delighted the eye.

Showing that they could ply needle and thread, the student "fashionistas" created wearable art that was as much about creating concepts as outfits. The tactile "Madam CJ Walker" dress, created by Keisuke Kuwabara '09, and worn by Meron Hailekiros '08, looked as if it were made from hair cuttings to celebrate different hair textures.

A "Trig Dress" created by Haley Grove '09 was inspired by Trigonometry study guides; The "Cell Bio" dress fashioned by Sara Miller '10, and worn by Leah Shorser-Gentile '10, was imprinted all over with photos of stem cells. Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, artist and run-way model Rachel Simon '08, wore her "Neo-Morrigan" outfit inspired by the ancient Irish goddess Morrigan, a fearsome and beautiful deity of battle and sexuality.

Natalie Johnson '11 captured some limelight with her "Cranberry Lime" outfit, modeled by Grace Wilson '11 and crafted from soda tabs and cranberry lime selzer cans and boxes.

In her closing remarks, Wearable Art instructor, Alison Safford, paid special thanks to Sarah Renning '08, for being a spectacular teacher's assistant for the past three years. Sarah's red and white gingham check dress, worn by model Bea Kelsey-Watts '08, made its way down the runway to warm applause and enthusiastic cheers.

While Tony Loreti, visual arts teacher, suggested that the creation of art is its own reward, he acknowledged that students at The Cambridge School of Weston garnered much recognition at the annual Boston Globe Scholastic Art Award competition.
