Jane's Pocket Change: 5-7-5 & 42
This week I am working while on the road, so time for my Pocket Change preparation has been scant. But, sometimes, briefer can be better, so this week I'm trying my hand at delivering my Pocket Change via a haiku. I'm hoping you can you guess what recent major event here on campus I'm referring to when I write:
in knowing your rights
an inherent dignity
freedom justice peace
OK, perhaps this is too brief for a Pocket Change entry, so indulge me while I write a bit more.

Michael H. Feldman Social Justice Day. The result of countless hours of preparation by adults and students alike, our exploration of "Know Your Rights!" took us on a range of journeys -- from global human rights to privacy rights, from constitutional rights to religious rights, from immigration rights to reproductive rights. Every one of these journeys was thoughtfully led by students and their carefully prepared workshops. The day kicked off with thematic songs performed by our own Social Justice Day Band and a keynote presentation from John Napier Tye, who encouraged us to educate ourselves about our rights so that we could take real action in an effort to effect change.
I was tremendously impressed by our students and their willingness to really dig in at this year's Social Justice Day -- from the initiative, organization and execution of the day's events by the student leaders (whether behind the scenes, on the stage or in the classroom) to the attentiveness and engagement of their peers, I ended the day thinking I simply could not be prouder of our students and was encouraged by what the impact of this day might have on them. Or in other words:
socially conscious
