Consolidated Goodbyes

Our last assembly was this past Monday. In a way, it was the beginning of the end as we kicked off the week that leads to graduation. It’s been quite the year for our bi-weekly all-school meetings, ably led by the fabulous four-student assembly coordinators: Andrius Alvarez-Backus ’18, Lindsay Gould ’18, Jalen Holmes ’20, and Saidah Lopez ‘20. Seniors Andrius and Lindsay both revealed that they had fulfilled a childhood (well, from their first day of 9th grade!) dream to be an assembly coordinator, and indeed the two of them, with sophomores Jalen and Saidah, made quite a wonderful foursome.

The assembly on Monday began with a brilliantly satirical video called
The Godfather; about the demise of the patriarch of Consolidated Media (CSW’s spirited student media group). We then played “Name That Senior” and guessed who the member of the senior class was after hearing a few obscure facts about them. The assembly ended with the annual sharing of testimonials by our seniors, which never fails to be powerful and thoughtful. To hear the seniors speak from their hearts as they reflect on their time here is inspiring to us all, and the advice they give to our younger students is sincere and poignant. A list of the essence of some of this senior wisdom follows:

  • Be yourself.
  • Take all that you like about yourself and go for it.
  • Find people to talk to, be it a fellow student or one of our awesome teachers.
  • Join things, start clubs.
  • Take charge of your own destiny.
  • Love yourself and others will love you.
  • Get involved and take advantage of the opportunities that this school offers, even if you’re scared; any opportunity will help you to learn about yourself.
  • Take time to help the people around you, and the school.
  • Learn how to be a good leader, grow in confidence, discover how to express yourself—that’s what I did.

Today (Tuesday), as I write this, the tent is going up on the quad right outside my office window and I have just returned from a fantastic Rock-Pop Ensemble performance of student-written songs featuring, among others, the work of the amazing Harry Massing ’19. Senior Night is tomorrow (Wednesday) and graduation is on Friday. All of us are living through many “finals” this week.

Congratulations, everyone, on a wonderful year. Have a splendid summer — and seniors/soon-to-be graduates, be sure to come back and visit!
