Two Earn National Scholastic Medals
CSW is excited to announce that two students have won National Medals from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Congratulations to Julian Applebaum ’19 and Tommy Shenefield ’19.
This year, students across the nation in grades 7–12 submitted close to 340,000 works of art to be considered for awards in 29 categories. From that pool, a smaller selection of works was judged and deemed worthy of Gold Key, Silver Key, or Honorable Mention awards. Students at CSW earned 59 regional awards, 13 of which were Gold Keys. Roughly 90,000 works across the nation were recognized and advanced to national adjudication in NYC. Of those Gold Key works, just 2,700 received National Medals.
Two CSW student pieces were selected as national winners. Their work is considered as part of the top 1% of art and writing submitted to the 2019 Scholastic Awards.
Julian Applebaum ’19 won a Silver Medal for his piece, "Politicized Womenhood," in the Personal Essay and Memoir category.
“I was thrilled to learn that I won a national award! It's exciting to know that the words I write and the stories I tell resonate with others from across the country. It gives me confidence as a writer and the courage to keep telling my story,” says Julian of winning the national award.
Tommy Shenefield ’18 earned a Silver Medal for his piece, "Moments of Wonder" in the Art Portfolio category.
Tommy says, “The drawings (and single animation) in this portfolio are the result of many inspirations from the Provincetown Portuguese Festival, to a personal fondness for singing rubber fish and potted plants. I would describe these works as unusual vignettes, which I created out of the desire to bring my many incongruous thoughts to life.”
