CSW Celebrates Diversity Day

Community members came together for a day of activities, and performances centered around the theme of diversity on Wednesday, taking part in student- and faculty-led workshops like "Jewish Culture through Food," "Media Definitions of Whiteness," "Stepping through Bachata," and "Asian and Asian American Cinema."

This year's keynote was: "Jose Obando: The 350+ Year Evolution of Salsa." José is a musicologist, lecturer, and curator and special consultant for the Salsa collection of instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In his presentation to the community, he performed with fellow musicians Alexis Quinoñes, Jerry Madera, Michael Lopez, and Keith Rosello, and spoke about the intersection of Native, African, and European music in the evolution of salsa music. He also presented and explained the origin of instruments like the cuatro, güiro, maraca, and conga. Later, José and the band offered workshops where students could delve more deeply into musical history and try the instruments out for themselves.
