JSA Has Strong Showing at Winter Congress
Twenty-one students from CSW’s Junior State of America (JSA) chapter headed to Washington, D.C. last weekend to participate in the organization’s Winter Congress, an annual event where students from around the country can visit the nation’s capital and learn how bills are made and passed through simulated committee sessions. During the convention, participants attend committee meetings, offer amendments and watch the markup process on proposed legislation, practicing their public speaking skills as sponsors for bills and negotiating to gain supporters for their issue in the House and Senate sessions.
Prior to the event, CSW students proposed three bills: (1) Legalizing the sale of sex (2) Legalizing the use of marijuana (3) Providing clarity on cosmetic regulations. Over 120 bills were proposed, and all three of CSW’s bills were included in the 40 that were ultimately selected to go in front of the House and Senate. From there, CSW’s bill on legalizing prostitution was one of only 16 chosen to be discussed in larger committees. It’s also worth noting that CSW’s contingent was the second smallest of the entire event, a fact that makes their accomplishments all the more impressive.
