Professor Yuri Doolan, Ph.D., Speaks at Assembly
This week at assembly, the CSW community welcomed Professor Yuri Doolan, Ph.D., for a presentation on the history of racism against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States. Yuri Doolan (Ph.D., Northwestern University 2019) is Assistant Professor of History and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies as well as inaugural Chair of Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies at Brandeis University. His work explores the lasting legacies and human consequences of U.S. militarism in Asia and the Pacific.
In his talk, Professor Doolan spoke about the current prevalence of violence and racism against AAPI individuals in the United States and put it in context, sharing some of the exclusionary policies the U.S. has historically put in place to keep people of Asian descent isolated or out of the country completely through a pattern of military, economic, and racialized acts. He also discussed the rise and harm of the "Model Minority," misperception, and offered advice on how students can further educate themselves on these important topics, and continue to engage in anti-racist work.
Professor Doolan will continue the conversation started at this week's assembly at a special gathering hosted by CSW Asian Heritage Affinity group next week.
