CSW Alum Named 2022 Truman Scholar
Established by Congress in 1975 as the living memorial to President Harry S. Truman, the Truman award and scholarship are awarded to college students who are aspiring service leaders, honoring their incredible work in championing democracy, human rights, and public service. Fifty-eight Truman Scholars were selected this year from the 705 candidates nominated by 275 colleges and universities.
Julian was nominated by his college, Macalester College, for his work advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in the judicial system and in the education system. He spearheaded an initiative with the ACLU of Minnesota to uphold protections for transgender students in public schools and assisted with recruiting signatories for amicus briefs that went before the Supreme Court in Fulton v. Philadelphia. Julian says his passion for the law stems from his own identity as a transgender man and from his time spent competing in moot court. Julian is the founder and president of Macalester’s highly ranked moot court team.
While at CSW, Julian helped to lead and grow CSW’s Junior State of America (JSA) chapter, earning multiple individual awards for his debate skills, and helping to mentor and foster a new generation of debaters and civic activists at CSW. He was also an instrumental leader of CSW’s Curriculum Committee.
