Lise's Lens: May 12, 2022

Today Lise writes about the role of high school athletics, a recent video presentation by the Panama Mod Abroad students, and the resilience of high school students in Ukraine.

WHAT I’M READING

  • I thought this was an interesting article on high school athletics. In the piece, a representative from the Aspen Institute’s Sports & Society Program explains how many schools still subscribe to a “1970s” model of sports, which centers around interscholastic team programs only, and that most students today say they care more about having fun, exercising, learning, and being social than winning championships. I found the whole thing to be very mission-affirming.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO/WATCHING

  • Yesterday, the students who went on the Mod Abroad trip to Panama spoke about their experience and shared this wonderful video highlighting some of their favorite moments from the trip. I am so proud we were able to keep the trip alive (thank you, Patricio, Steve, and Po-Wei) and I am also very proud of all the students who participated in the trip. Soon after their arrival, they were faced with a drastic culture shock, which they handled with grace and determination. I know this will be a trip they will not easily forget.

WHAT I’M THINKING/TALKING ABOUT

  • I have been thinking about the role of resilience and determination in young people’s lives after listening to this interview with some high school students from Ukraine who are competing in the International Science Fair.
