Lise's Lens: September 29, 2022

This week, Lise educates herself on the situation in Iran, reflects on the words of poet Amanda Gorman, and celebrates the revival of group gatherings.

WHAT I’M READING
 
  • As protests continue in Iran, I have been trying to read as much as I can to better understand the context and driving forces behind the unrest. I thought this newsletter from The New York Times did a good job of spelling things out. From women’s rights to generational divides to the role of government and the power of the internet — there is so much to unpack and learn from these events. I know it is a very complex time for community members with ties to the region. We are thinking of you. 


WHAT I’M LISTENING TO/WATCHING

  • I just listened to Amanda Gorman's poem at the UN General Assembly. Once again, Amanda Gorman brings me awe and introspection and inspiration. It is not surprising to me that the UN chose a young poet and visionary to inspire this group of leaders assembled for their work. Our youth is begging us — those of us in power — to "dare to do good," especially when it comes to the sustainability of our planet.

WHAT I’M THINKING/TALKING ABOUT
 
  • I'm thinking about how wonderful it is to witness students, faculty, staff, and families return to a greater sense of routine and normalcy in their lives, with more opportunities for gathering and connection. I hope that families who celebrate Rosh Hashanah, for example, were able to enjoy an in person gathering this year!


  • Of course, I am also thinking about everyone down in Florida and the Caribbean dealing with the devastating impacts of Hurricane Ian, right on the heels of Hurricane Fiona. It has been frightening to see the scenes of destruction from yet another mammoth weather event. 
 
WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE

Yesterday I was delighted to welcome a group of our Chinese parents who live in the area or were passing through for an afternoon luncheon. It was so nice to catch up and connect and I look forward to hosting more events like this throughout the year!
