Lise's Lens: October 27, 2022

In this edition of Lise's Lens, Lise reads a NY Times article on "The Little Rituals That Keep Us Going," she cheers on the fall sports teams and invites you to join her, thinks about the impact of Kanye's voice and is grateful to all who volunteered for the Admissions Open House this past weekend!

WHAT I’M READING
  • A few years ago, I was helping my son pack his duffle for a two-year stint with the Peace Corps.  It was surprising to me how thoughtful and frugal he was about what he was taking with him to Ghana—until he reached for his pile of worn Harry Potter books.  I totally understood him packing the other books but Harry Potter? After all, he was a new college graduate eagerly headed to a new experience. AND he listened to Harry Potter before he could read the books and had listened and reread them more times than I could count!  He explained to me then how important the ritual of reading/listening to a chapter of one of the books (or watching an episode of the Office) was to his decompressing and taking time to shift gears. In this article from the New York Times, thousands of readers shared similar wellness “non-negotiables.” I wonder if you have any such rituals?

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO/WATCHING
  • Before the seasons end, I’m trying to catch as many volleyball and soccer games as possible and am grateful to have seen at least one field hockey game. It is SO much fun to see our students in action after school. I have only caught cross country practices so far and fear I may have to miss the championship being held on campus here next week… I hope many of you will come! Next up on my watchlist—our first theater production of the year!

WHAT I’M THINKING/TALKING ABOUT
  • I’m thinking about what’s going down with Kanye West and the impact of his voice in amplifying hate. Antisemitism and Holocaust denial are deplorable in any way, shape, or form—my feelings have ranged from disgust and anger about his blatant antisemitic rants to sadness that the Jewish community has to deal with this frightening and disheartening hate. I’m also thinking about the clear outcry on personal and institutional levels against his stance—it gives me hope that positions like these will not be tolerated, now and in the future.

WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE

  • This photo was taken at our Admissions Open House this past Saturday. It was a glorious day, and over 40+ volunteers spent the morning helping us literally “Open our House” to prospective students and families. Thank you to all of you who made the event such a success. We simply couldn’t host events like this without student and parent support!
