Lise's Lens: April 27, 2023

Lise reads up on Utah's proposed social media laws and shares the recording of the Academic Office's recent information session on "Progressive Ed in the Age of AI."

WHAT I’M READING

  • I have been reading about Utah’s new social media laws designed to regulate minors’ use of social media. Technology moves so quickly, it has been difficult for researchers to truly understand the impact social media has had on our students’ development and wellbeing, but I thought Mitch Prinstein, chief science officer at the American Psychological Association, had some really valuable insights in this interview with Slate. He believes that a complete ban fails to get to the heart of the issue (which is so often the case)!

WHAT I’M THINKING/TALKING ABOUT

  • I am thinking about what a busy time of year this is! A group of colleagues and I regularly get together to review the school calendar, and I just want to name how busy the next few weeks are with social gatherings, informational events, performances, and meetings. If anyone out there is feeling overwhelmed, I want you to know that it’s okay if you’re feeling like you can’t do it all! The final mod of the year is going to fly by and we all need to make sure we’re giving ourselves the breaks that we need to recharge so that we can be fully present and thoroughly enjoy all that is coming up.

WHAT I'M WATCHING/LISTENING TO

  • In case you missed it, I encourage you to check out the session our Academic Office hosted this week exploring what progressive education looks like in the age of AI. Thank you to Academic Dean Diana Baruni, Math Chair Rashid Chatani, English Chair Jeannette Lee-Parikh, History Teacher Patrick Foley, and Director of Library and Technology Integration Jenna Wolf for taking the time to share their fascinating insights.

WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE

This weekend we will be welcoming alumni back to campus for Reunion 2023! Many thanks to our facilities team and everyone working behind the scenes to make sure campus looks beautiful and the event goes off without a hitch. I look forward to these days every year!
