Changing Lives Art Auction
The Cambridge School of Weston (CSW) will hold a juried art auction February 28, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Thompson Gallery of The Garthwaite Center for Science and Art. The inaugural art auction will showcase the work of many of the school's graduates who have achieved national—and international—acclaim as professional artists.
"This gala occasion will be an opportunity to celebrate the amazing array of talented and accomplished artists affiliated with CSW, as well as to raise critical funds to endow visual arts programs at the school," said Jane Moulding, head of school.
Participating artists, who are graduates of CSW, include: Sophie Matisse '84, Jonas Wood '95, Niho Kozuru '86, Matt Johnson '96 and Miguel Calderon '89. Other featured artists include: CSW parent Michael Mazur; and faculty members: Todd Bartel, Tom Evans, Karl Fisher, Tad Lawrence, Tony Loreti, Anne Rearick, Alison Safford and Steve Scrimshaw. The work of CSW trustee John Thompson, who teaches printmaking at the Massachusetts College of Art, and for whom the Thompson Gallery is named, will also be represented.
“Energetic and dedicated teachers are at the heart of the CSW experience,” expressed Jane. "Our visual arts professionals bring passion and inspiration into every class, and CSW students make art that challenges our assumptions and brings beauty to our world.
“The art auction is very much an extension of the school’s premier visual arts program that offers a curricula rich in opportunities for substantive artistic exploration in a variety of media, from drawing and painting to digital photography, Raku pottery and installation art,” said Karl Fisher, chair, visual arts. “The excellence of the program is underscored by the impressive number of CSW students who regularly win national awards and attend some of the most prestigious art institutions in the country.”
Selected works, showcased in the Thompson Gallery, will be presented for live auction by auctioneer Joan F. Caddigan, C.A.I, of Caddigan Auctioneers & Appraisers, Inc. of Hanover, Mass. The remaining works were selected by jurors: Nicholas J. Capasso, Ph.D., curator, DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park; and Joshua Buckno, exhibition curator and co-director, Nielsen Gallery, Boston; and will be offered for sale in a silent auction to take place, also in the Garthwaite Center.
