Social justice is a fundamental component of the CSW mission and curriculum, as we seek to cultivate culturally-aware, global citizens. In addition to our Social Justice Requirement—the first of its kind in the country—there are countless social justice focused affinity groups, clubs, and organizations to get involved with. The school also hosts a number of annual community-wide events meant to educate, inspire, and build awareness. A sampling of such programming is listed below:
C.A.F.E.: Each year, students and adults alike host conversations as part of the Cultural Awareness For Everyone (CAFE) dialogue series. C.A.F.E strives to challenge everyone in our community to explore, question, consider and discuss best practices when delving into tough conversations. Individuals are encouraged to choose a topic, a reading, or a film to discuss in a roundtable discussion.
Identity Exploration Day: Identity Exploration Day is an annual event that offers a full day of workshops exploring a variety of diversity-related topics, ranging from cultural traditions and stereotypes to gender, class and body image. Diversity Day inclused an all-school assembly (showcasing speakers and performers), workshops (including discussions, performance, presentations, and hands-on activities), and community debriefs.
Social Justice Day: Each spring, CSW holds an annual school-wide event known as the Michael H. Feldman Social Justice Day. Formerly known as Law Day, the event was established in 1975 by Shirley and Roger Feldman in memory of their son, Michael Feldman ’67. The event explores various viewpoints on important legal and social issues of the day, creating opportunities for student discussion and debate, as well as guest speakers and presentations.
Culture Fest: Culture Fest is a celebration of the diversity of cultures within the CSW community. This event showcases dances, musical performances, and other celebrated facets of our shared and different cultures.
The IDEA Committee: Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Action Committee is a group of elected student representatives, staff, and faculty members whose purpose is to work together to make CSW an open and safe community that encourages all voices to be heard in a respectful manner, promoting the enrichment of our school culture through discussions, events and wide-ranging curricula.
As a committee, the group seeks to foster a campus that provides a sense of inclusiveness that reflects the broad range of ages, races, genders, ethnicities, cultures, nationalities, religions, sexual orientations, social and economic classes, and physical and learning differences in our community.
The Diversity Committee is charged with leading many on-campus events (like Diversity Day) and works closely with Affinity, Interest and Alliance Groups on trainings, conferences, or other important yearly leadership projects.
