Jane's Pocket Change: African Nectar is the Tea of Choice

Our seniors seem to love “Tea with Jane.” As they enter the living room they are all abuzz and there are often yelps of joy at the sight of the cucumber sandwiches.

Well guess what? Jane loves tea with our seniors! There are upbeat, delightful conversations; a few giggles; and sometimes some revealing facts, such as Jane's favorite TV show.  Mostly, it is easy and pleasant chatter and conversation about the place we all love.

I began offering tea at my house the year after I first arrived at CSW in 2002. During an unusual assembly, I proposed the idea to take students to tea. (During this assembly a teacher, two students and I all vied for the position of next head of school at CSW. Fortunately, the reference to tea -- which was met by cheers -- and my rendering of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from “Mary Poppins” clinched the deal for me!)

Each fall, with my assistant Sherrill's huge help, it is a great pleasure to host groups of seniors to munch on sandwiches, enjoy some cookies and sip tea out of my best china. I always offer several kinds of tea and enjoy serving it myself to the students. This year, Mighty Leaf's "African Nectar," a rooibos with tropical notes, seems to be their favorite, followed closely by Earl Grey.
