CSW is honored to be involved with Brandeis University for the second year as participants in their annual weeklong “festival of social justice,” called ‘DEIS Impact.' The event involves dozens of discussions, workshops, performances, and exhibitions.

This year's 'DEIS Impact' also includes a keynote talk on the evening of Wednesday, February 5, by Nelson Mandela’s grandsons, Kweku Mandela-Amuah and Ndaba Mandela, who will speak about the creation of The Africa Rising Foundation, which honors their grandfather’s legacy and seeks to publicize a positive image of Africa across the globe. A group of CSW students and faculty members will be attending this exciting and important keynote presentation.

Additionally, on Friday, February 7, CSW students, faculty and staff will travel to Brandeis in Waltham, MA, to attend a day of thought-provoking festival sessions such as “Social Justice, Power and Violence: The Anthropology of Political Systems,” and "Workshop of an Activist: Finding Motivations and Empowering Others."

That evening, CSW students and faculty will also present a festival workshop titled “Are We Truly Postracial? Think Again.” The workshop will be based off of work done in the “Alliance Building Across Cultural Divisions” (ABCD) course, taught by CSW Director of Social Justice and Multicultural Programing Johára Tucker. Johára challenged her students to use the medium of art to answer the question, “Does race still matter in your life?” What developed was a series of postcards addressing various issues such as affirmative action, adoption, typecasting in musical theater and the lunch table.
