Girls' Tennis Shows Promising Determination vs. Landmark

Out of all the dramatic, thrilling, and making hair white matches the CSW Girls' Tennis team has played this season, today's match against Landmark occupies a distinguished spot. In a 1-4 emotionally draining, yet uplifting loss, CSW Girls' Tennis displayed yet again their uncanny grit, determination, and poise. Many players were placed in positions a place or two higher in the roster before the match commenced, meaning that many players were playing in more competitive matches than usual, and everyone responded by elevating their game, and their composure.

In her fourth consecutive victory, Maya Barnes '17 played perhaps her fiercest opponent yet. In a match which lasted nearly 90 minutes, Maya would simply not concede defeat. Trailing 7-8, and only one point away from defeat, Maya miraculously, and to many observers, inexplicably, rallied to tie the match at 8-8, and force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Maya was trailing 4-6, again, one fraction away from a loss, and through a series of crisp forehands and superbly placed drop shots, provided CSW with the 9-8 (8-6) victory. Interviewed after the game by a fan, Maya was calm, collected, and modestly claimed that she had no idea that it was her fourth consecutive victory.

At number two singles, Simenesh Semine '17 displayed her quintessentially inspiring work ethic. Despite the 2-8 result, Simenesh brought the vast majority of the games to Deuce (some games featured more than three deuces!), and was merely points away from turning the proverbial tide. In a few more weeks, Simenesh will be able to defeat her most indefatigable opponents. Simenesh continues to improve with her serving, and continues to gain more confidence in her positioning on the court.

At number three singles, Amanda Poorvu '15 played her first singles match of the season, and exhibited why she is a force with which to be reckoned. With a steady backhand stroke, and some amazing topspin, Amanda came within a few points of toppling her Landmark opponent, falling by the very closer margin of 6-8.

In yet another thrilling match, The number one doubles squad of Anne Hittson '14 and Alexandra Kahn '16 trailed 2-7, and were within two points of defeat when they truly found their hitting groove. Amanda and Alexandra valiantly fought to bring the match back to 6-7 after recording four unanswered games, yet left the court just a little unfulfilled, by a tally of 6-8.

In our final match of the day, the number two doubles team of freshmen Sarah Buta '17 and Abby Lawrence '17 played at a level far more advanced then their youth would lead one to believe. In another tiebreaker, and heartbreaking match, Sarah and Abby came just points short of victory, and Landmark was able to record the win 9-8.

Once again the CSW Girls' Tennis squad played remarkably well together, and continues to show signs of vast improvement.
