Several members of the CSW Ultimate Frisbee A-team (Uruk-Hai) traveled to Amherst, MA last weekend, where they participated in the 2014 Amherst Invitational Ultimate Tournament.

CSW came out of the prestigious, two-day tournament with a 2-3 record in the B-Div
ision. Facing off against some very strong teams, such as Sharon High School, Concord-Carlisle High School, and Somerville High School, the CSW team proved their place among the Northeast's top High School Ultimate teams in five full-length weekend games. On Saturday, CSW lost close matches to both Concord-Carlisle and Sharon High School. While Uruk-Hai managed to run even with both teams through the first few points of both games, the speed and experience of these two public High School teams proved too much for CSW to handle. Uruk-Hai still managed to have a blast in their two first games and took away positives from both match-ups.

In the final Saturday game, CSW came out firing versus the Amherst JV-B squad. Uruk-Hai built up a big lead thanks to the savvy and impressive handling of co-captain Jason Bair '14 and the fierce deep cutting by CSW cutters Chris MacFadyen '15, Jacob Arons '15, Aidan Fitzgerald '17, and Will Blumenthal '16. The game ended with CSW on top by a score of 15-6.

Sunday's games were some of the most exciting and impassioned Ultimate games that the CSW team has played all season. The first game saw CSW face off against a very strong and spirited PVPA (Pioneer Valley Performing Arts) team. It was a game of comebacks, big leads, long points, and great spirit. In the end, PVPA escaped with a 13-11 victory. The final point was more than 15 minutes long and featured several footblocks, layout D's, and hard in cuts from Emily McCarter '14, Greg Wright '14, and Austin Thies '16. At the end of the game, CSW formed a cheer pyramid and cheered on PVPA for playing such a spirited and friendly game. PVPA returned the favor with their own 'Ultimate Freestyle Rap,' complementing CSW's style of play and their hustle. The bond that formed between these two honest and hardworking teams, in less than two hours of playing against one another, was an amazing sight to see.

In the final game of the tournament, CSW played against a very talented Somerville High School team (a team that won the B-Division last year). The wind picked up dramatically and the teams traded points for the first hour and a half of the match-up. There were never more than two goals separating the teams in the game. The time-cap was put on at a tie score of 10-10, meaning that the next point would win the game! After many amazing goal-line defensive stands (kudos to new star Noah Wass '16 for the stellar defense,) handler Jason Bair picked up the disc and hucked deep to Owen McCarter '17. Owen grabbed the disc in the air and immediately found Jacob Arons in the endzone for the final point and the win, as the CSW players ran onto the field and celebrated the hard-fought victory!

The entire CSW team stayed at the fields until the end of the day, awaiting the Tournament Awards Ceremony. Once the ceremony started, CSW learned that they were to take home the Spirit Award, which is voted on by all tournament teams and is awarded to the team that best embodies Ultimate's core concept of 'Spirit of the Game' - fair play, sportsmanship, and respect between players. It's an amazing honor and an accomplishment the entire community should be proud of!

When asked about his experience at the tournament, freshman Aidan Fitzgerald responded, "Going to the Amherst Tournament as a freshman is probably the highlight of my school year. It was an awesome experience, where I really just learned about all things Ultimate. The high point of the entire experience, although all of it was amazing fun, was being acknowledged as the most spirited team, and winning an award for it. It just helped to reiterate the point that the true winners of Ultimate are the ones who have fun, play hard, and meet new people!"

Congrats Uruk-Hai and thank you for representing CSW in such a fine light on the playing fields!
