Boys' Varsity Soccer Team Stays Strong in Championship Match

On November 5th, the Boys' Varsity Soccer team traveled to Waring School in Beverly, MA to play in the 2014 MBIL Championship match.

After defeating Newman School by a score of 1-0 in the semifinals two days earlier, the Boys' Varsity Soccer team advanced to the finals of the MBIL for the second year in a row. And, for a second year in a row, they had to match up against a strong Waring School squad on their home field in Beverly.

The Gryphons came into the match missing one of their captains and leaders, senior and midfielder Jacob Arons '15, who was out with a concussion and a hurt shin. As Jacob cheered on his team from the sidelines, the Gryphons struggled to gain a foothold in the first half. Waring came out of the gates with speed and scored two quick goals in the first fifteen minutes. They also tacked on a third goal in the first half, after receiving a penalty kick on a controversial play in the box.

In the second half, the Gryphons came out with purpose and determination. Behind amazing goalie play by Evan Smith '15, CSW stayed in the match and mounted several attacking runs. CSW finally connected on a scoring play, when Dexter Wadsworth '15 put in a goal and cut the lead to 3-1. Despite CSW's strong second half performance, the 3-0 first half hole was too large to climb out of.

When the final whistle blew, Waring sat atop the MBIL with a 3-1 finals victory. However, CSW still had plenty to be proud of. They put together a great regular season, with several highlights and a repeat Championship appearance. Way to go Gryphons!
