CSW's Cross Country team celebrated their strong fall season and congratulated their senior star runner Zachary Joachim '15, who placed first in the Massachusetts Bay Independent League (MBIL).

Zachary Joachim '15
won the final race of the year to become the league champion with a winning time of 18:02. He was also named the Most Valuable Runner of the league for the 2014 season. The MBIL Championship meet featured several schools and over 100 runners. The Gryphons finished third overall, out of a total of 10 teams.

Zach shared that he was most proud of his personal record of 16:06 in a 5K race prior to the championship meet.

“I focused more on place than time for most of the races this fall,” he said. “So it was nice to get a chance to go for something quick on a relatively fast course, and it's always nice to win a medal at a championship.”

The team of students from all grades continued to improve after a big win at a regular season meet in early October. They competed with two of their top runners out all fall with injuries, and there was a lot of speculation as to what their final standing would be had they been contributing. Zach felt that CSW does a good job of supporting its athletes in a community that is positive and knowledgeable.

“CSW’s Athletic Director is phenomenal,” he said. “With a coach focused on helping each member of the team improve, in a positive training environment, it allowed me to put in the kind of work necessary to get faster."

Next year, Zach plans on running collegiately. After a well-deserved break, he plans to shift focus to the indoor track this winter.

“I've been really lucky throughout my high school career,” added Zach. “I've had terrific coaches who believed in me and put me in a position to succeed.”
