Lise's Lens is CSW Head of School Lise Charlier's weekly blog. Check back each week to find out what Lise has been reading, watching, and thinking about.
Like many of our students, I have been so busy and engaged with school-related items this week that I’ve hardly had the time or mental capacity to read or watch anything, but I’ve got a few items on my list, like the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and the important upcoming documentary, The Librarians. Happy End of Mod, everyone, and thank you for a great six weeks.
This week I am still glowing from a fabulous weekend welcoming families to CSW for Fall Fest, chatting with new families at the Head’s House, and enjoying a student instrumental ensemble performance in Dedham.
This week I am reading Absolution by Alice McDermott, thinking about Fall Fest and our incredible community mosaic project, and watching the documentary, The Quilters.
This week I am reading a NYT interview with Brené Brown, thinking about how engaged and enthusiastic our students are, and watching our boarders perform fractured fairytales.
Hello — and welcome to the first installment of Lise’s Lens of the 2025-26 school year! Lise’s Lens is my weekly blog, which is released every Thursday afternoon with the community newsletter. Take a look to find out what I’ve been reading, thinking about, and watching/listening to.
This past week, I had the great fortune of joining our Marine Bio students for the tail end of their trip to Hurricane Island. Now that I have returned, I am thinking about 50 years of Pride, savoring my final few Senior Teas, and gearing up to watch the musical tonight!
This week I am reading about fast fashion, celebrating the work our faculty and staff members have put into our AISNE accreditation self study report, and listening to a fascinating podcast episode on the state of education.
This week, I am reading up on the latest trends in education, watching our community garden bloom with fresh produce, and asking all parents and guardians to please — if you have not already! — complete the one-question survey that was shared with you over email.
This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. Whether you follow these sorts of events or not, if you are reading this, I invite you to take this opportunity to show gratitude to an important teacher in your life, whether it’s your own teacher, one of your children’s teachers, or someone from your past. Here at CSW, we have some of the best teachers in the world, and I hope they know just how impactful their work is. I got to hear about it firsthand from our alumni at Reunion this past weekend!
Happy End-of-Mod 5! I am still glowing from all of our student performances, presentations, and exhibitions this week — and everything that happened in Mod 5. As we head into Mod 6, the final stretch of the academic year, I encourage all of us to stay present and savor each class, interaction, and gathering, because it is going to go fast!
The weather (finally!) seems to have turned for the better this week, just in time for our Earth Day celebration. It has been a delight to see students hanging out, studying, and having lunch out on the quad. And there’s still a few days left of National Poetry Month, so why not head outside and read some poetry in the sunshine?
This week I am reading a YA book I picked up at last week’s AISNE conference, thinking about the incredible Zora Foundation exhibit at the Weston Public Library, and watching as students, faculty, and staff celebrate 50 years of Social Justice Day at CSW!
Every week as I sit down to write Lise’s Lens I think — wow, there is a lot going on around here! — and I’m realizing it’s going to stay this way until the end of the school year. After a successful set of admissions revisit days last week, we co-hosted a conference for high schoolers who identify as students of color over the weekend. Then, on Tuesday, we presented the State of the School (click here if you missed it!), and yesterday we celebrated our annual Day of Giving!
CSW—a gender-inclusive day and boarding school for grades 9-12—is a national leader in progressive education. We live out our values of inquiry-based learning, student agency, and embracing diverse perspectives in every aspect of our student experience. Young people come to CSW to learn how to learn and then put what they learn into action—essential skills they carry into their futures as doers, makers, innovators, leaders, and exceptional humans who do meaningful work in the world.
