Health Education

The purpose of Health education at CSW is to empower students to make informed, autonomous choices in support of their health. The health curriculum emphasizes identity exploration, critical analysis of media and popular culture, access to accurate information about individual health, building interpersonal skills, and goal setting.

In addition to our academic classes, health education also occurs through extracurricular programming, including D-block electives, assembly presentations and class meetings.

    (9) Building an understanding of one's identity and developing the skills to make autonomous choices are two of the most important tasks of adolescence. In this course, students will explore the relationship between identity development and health, both generally and personally. The class begins with an examination of individual identity in a social context. Students will consider multiple dimensions of identity and how each relates to health. The course will then focus on adolescent health issues, including the influence of media on wellbeing; nutrition, exercise, and sleep; emotions; mental health; substance use; relationships; and sexuality. Students will explore the many choices that adolescents confront related to these topics, and they will consider each within the context of identity development.

This course awards credit toward the social justice graduation requirement.
