Tree Climbing on a Ficus Tree + Snorkeling at Peach Coral Reef
Avery '26 & Iris '26
Hello from ITEC!
Today was our second full day at the research institute! After a breakfast of French toast, fruit, and oatmeal we split up into two groups. The main goal of today was to finalize our research questions for the upcoming labs we will be doing, so we explored two different possible sites for research. The first group went tree climbing on a ficus tree, which is a type of fig tree. This tree is a home to many different ecosystems. Such as different kinds of ants, monkeys and iguanas. Our second group went snorkeling at Peach coral reef, a local reef that is home to many different types of fish and coral. Our assignment was to remember the species we saw and later, write them down on the chalkboard after using books to identify them. Some of the students found Feather dusters, banded butterfish, squid, crabs and more! In the afternoon, the groups switched so everyone had the chance to tree climb and snorkel which allowed each student to explore the different ecosystems. After dinner, we all shared out and finalized our final lab question and hypothesis with Liz, Pete and Leo. To wind down we played a group game of salad bowl before bed. We are all so excited to start our research and explore this island more in the coming days!
