Elyse Johnson '27 Competes with Team USA's Baton Twirling Team in Italy

This summer Elyse Johnson '27 and her duet partner Marissa Rufo earned a spot on Team USA's Baton Twirling team! She traveled to Turin, Italy in August to compete in the International Baton Twirling Federation Nations Cup, an international baton twirling championship. She qualified in Senior Duet at a national trial in January and is also the alternate for Junior 3-Baton.
Elyse has been twirling since she was a toddler, entering her first national competition at age 5. She is part of the Gangi Bay State Strutters, a baton program with over 50 years of local history, founded by her aunt and now directed by her mother. To help fund the high costs associated with international competition - including mandatory training and travel with the U.S. team - Elyse came up with a creative idea: she began handmaking crochet sports dolls, each one taking several hours to complete. Between training, crocheting, and a summer job, Elyse is working hard to earn her way to Italy.
