Finding Ancient Greek Truths in the Land and Sky
Take an interactive journey back in time and uncover ancient truths with history teacher Rachel Hirsch.
In this workshop, you will use land formations and architectural ruins, artifacts, and excavations to explore (and maybe even solve) the murder of Philip II of Macedon, who was murdered in 336 BCE. Then you'll travel further back in time to explore the ruins of Knossos and deconstruct the myth of the Minotaur, as environmental historians, seeking the true story of the labyrinth and the creature that ruled it. In doing so, the lesson will delve into complex ideas of gender, power, and how culturally-constructed definitions of nature and what's natural can give birth to a mythological beast.
This workshop comes from the learning approaches and new structures developed during Rachel's Parkhill Grant-supported trip to northern Greece and Crete, exploring the environmental history of the early life of Alexander the Great and several of the most famous Mycenaean myths.
The Sea & She: How the Oceans Empower Women and Communities Across the Globe
In this dynamic workshop with science teacher Meredith Oppegard, you will explore the connection between indigenous women and the ocean in the Pacific Northwest (USA), Jeju Island (S. Korea), and Zanzibar (Tanzania).
Taking a virtual tour via Google Earth Voyager, you will uncover the ways that the three key through-lines of reciprocity, anti-dominance, and matrilineage emerge in all three locations. The workshop will include a roundtable discussion of the intersection of power, gender, and environment.
