The English department at CSW is distinguished by the diversity and breadth of our course offerings, which allow students to pursue existing interests and find new challenges. Along with a diverse range of electives that encompass the classics and contemporary literature, a sequence of required classes builds writing skills within a peer community from grades nine through eleven.
Our English classes cultivate joy, creative thinking, and curiosity in learning. Students practice deep reading, critical listening, and building authentic discussions together, particularly using the Socratic seminar model. The writing and revision processes are integral to our classes, and encompass individual and peer workshops. English assignments stretch students’ persuasive, creative, collaborative, research, presenting, and reflective capacities across a range of critical writing assignments. Our students are also expected to leverage technology as they develop mastery in English skills.
