CSW junior Lila Blaustein has been honored with an Outstanding Youth Volunteer award from the Needham Community Farm for her hours of service and “demonstrated qualities of exemplary leadership.” The award was presented by Rep. Denise Garlick at a ceremony in late October.

In the spring of 2016, Lila spent three hours, every Saturday, volunteering at the farm, later going on to serve as a teacher’s assistant for a gardening class hosted by the farm. In total, she worked over 20 hours, and during that time became an important community member, growing close with her fellow volunteers and farm workers.

“I loved working at the farm,” says Lila. “I learned so much about planting, caring for, and harvesting fresh fruits and vegetables. Before starting to work at the farm I had never so much as gardened before and by the end I was helping teach a class. It was an extremely rewarding experience and I often felt like I produced work I could be proud of and work that gave me a sense of accomplishment.”

The Needham Community Farm seeks to educate the community on practices of sustainable growing and nutrition, while also making healthy produce accessible and available to underserved communities, donating a large portion of its harvested foods to shelters and other charity organizations.”

Congratulations to Lila and all of the other volunteers!
