Brazilian Drummer Bruno Tessele Visits CSW

On March 8, 2024, students in Gustavo Brasil's "Beat Making" music class got a special visit from Brazilian drummer Bruno Tessele!  Bruno has been working extensively as a musician, composer, producer, arranger and teacher on the Brazilian and international music scene.

During his time with our students he demonstrated classic Brazilian rhythms like Samba, Bossa-Nova and Chamamé. Students were given sheets with the grooves written and they had to try to play or program it as beats. He also played and demonstrated the styles with a band formed by music teachers Gustavo, Michael Weinstein , Cal D. '25 and Ben S. '25. Bruno showed options for them to modify the rhythms and make it more personal so they can incorporate on their own works, compositions and recordings.

At the end of his visit everyone came together with a percussion instrument and played a rhythm called "Ijexá," in which each student had a part to play and a few bars to improvise. Listen to them playing together on our Instagram!

In 2017 he released his album, “Adelante”. In 2019 he produced, arranged and played on the album “Canto e Lugar” by composer/singer Luiz Martins, who was nominated for the 2020 Açorianos Music Award. Besides currently working on his own projects: Bronco Trio and Bruno Tessele Quintet; Bruno also plays with guitarist Michel Leme, the UsB duo, and Edson Santanna Trio.

Over the years Bruno has played/recorded with CSW music teacher Gustavo Assis-Brasil, Raul de Souza, Dom Salvador, Esperanza Spalding, Soundscape Big Band; Elza Soares, Filipe Catto, Maria Alcina, Eliana Pittman, Vânia Bastos, among others. He was also part of the orchestra of the critically acclaimed musicals: “Elis Regina: Elis – A Musical” and “Milton Nascimento – Nada Ser Como Antes”.

CSW thanks Bruno for joining us & sharing his knowledge with our students!
