Over the past three days, heads of school and mentors from all four schools participating in the Progressive Education Lab have convened at The Putney School, in Putney, Vt., for a three-day Mentoring Workshop.
In preparation for the start of PEL’s second year, PEL heads of school and mentors used this time to reflect on the program’s first year, consider how adult development can impact the learning of novice teachers, and discuss several elements of successful mentoring. Returning mentors were able to meet and greet the four new mentors involved with PEL this year; Putney Theatre teacher Karla Baldwin, Calhoun Social Studies teacher Marco Sanchez, CSW English teacher Mark Santa-Maria, and Unquowa Grade Five teacher Mary Faulkner.
Additionally, workshop participants were busy planning the upcoming year’s curriculum and discussing logistics, including the role of technology in the program’s future.
On the second day, mentors and school heads talked with educational consultant and keynote speaker Gene Thompson-Grove. Thompson-Grove is a former Co-Director of the School Reform Initiative and a creator of Critical Friends Groups, which are teacher/administrator discussion workshops focused on effective teacher mentoring and student achievement.
The official start of the second year of the Progressive Education Lab is rapidly approaching. The four fellows who are part of PEL’s initial 2012-2014 cohort; Sam Egilman, Dana Wolfson, Aspen Golann, and Hallie Herz, will each begin their paid teaching internship year in late August. Sam will be teaching at The Unquowa School. Dana will be teaching at The Calhoun School. Aspen will be teaching at The Putney School. And, Hallie will be teaching at CSW.
The new 2013-2015 cohort of PEL fellows will be starting their program with a one-day orientation at CSW in early September before beginning Quad One of their first year. Stay tuned in the next week for full bios of the four new PEL fellows!
