5 Benefits of Boarding at CSW

ACCESS

For families who don't live within a commuting distance, CSW's uniquely progressive and experiential academic program is still accessible through our boarding program! Of course, some of our boarding students are local enough that they could be day students, but they choose to live on campus. Being a boarder means they trade commuting time for extra access to campus facilities and programming, as well as a chance to live in a community where the line between "school" and "home" disappears.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Many boarding schools are "in the middle of nowhere." And while CSW boasts a beautifully serene and safe campus with great tree-shaded study spots and wooded trails, we're also just 12 miles from Cambridge and Boston and all of the cultural offerings and activities therein. So in addition to the activities offered on campus each weekend, we have off-campus trips to Harvard Square, theatre shows, concerts, and professional athletic games. We also provide a number of opportunities to participate in leadership conferences and community service, among many other offerings. The weekend activities are included in tuition, and open to boarders and day students alike!

A FAMILY STYLE PROGRAM

With four dorms and 90 boarding students, the intentional size of our residential community is aligned with the high value we place on meaningful relationships. Our dorm parents have the time and skills to build strong relationships with boarding students, allowing them to better care for and mentor them. We have weekly dorm meetings to celebrate birthdays and achievements and to plan celebrations and community service projects together. Each dorm has a cherished set of "family traditions" that students look forward to, and students are connected to many adults they can turn to for anything from homework help to advice.

FLEXIBILITY

Many boarding schools limit a student's ability to leave campus—even to go home and visit family. At CSW, most students stay on campus to participate in our activities program and to spend time with friends, but we offer flexibility in meeting the individual needs of each student, whether it's for a weekend home with family or a mid-week birthday dinner off campus with friends.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

In keeping with the student-centered, growth mindset approach of our academic program, we believe students flourish with a balance of structure and flexibility that allows them to learn important life skills, try new things, and develop a stronger sense of self. We give students a solid set of guidelines and support around how to plan outings, communicate plans, manage time, complete schoolwork, etc.—and also talk with them about the decisions and plans they're making. We set clear expectations about their personal responsibility, and make adjustments according to their ability to meet these expectations. This allows students to develop autonomy and responsibility while still in the care of adults and a structured program, which is great preparation for living at college!
