Sports should be fun and challenging and success should be defined by more than wins and losses. Relationships are the foundation of everything, especially a formative and enjoyable athletic experience. A coach must lead with positivity and compassion in order to build the relationships necessary to hold players accountable to the goals and expectations that lead to team success. Volleyball requires unwavering self confidence and a short memory which can only be taught if athletes are in a space where they feel comfortable making mistakes. Skills and fundamentals are the foundation of our play, but relationships are the foundation of creating a space where these skills can be honed. If done correctly, the growth that happens in that space will transcend the sport.  

After playing four years of club volleyball in college, Ted began coaching in the fall of 2015 as an assistant coach for the Girls Varsity team at the Noble and Greenough School. In his first year with the team, they made it to the Semi-Finals of the NEPSAC tournament. After two years as an assistant, he was elevated to the head coaching position. In his tenure the team went undefeated and won their league, two players went on to compete in college and he helped shepard the program through Covid-19. During this time he also pursued his Masters in Sports Administration from Boston College. Upon completing his masters in spring of 2021, he left Nobles for an opportunity as a volunteer assistant coach for the Boston College Women’s Volleyball team. At BC, Ted supported the players and coaching staff in a multitude of ways. The level of competition was exciting and the details with which the coaching staff approached their work really helped him see the game of volleyball more analytically. During this time Ted also coached a U12 Team for SMASH volleyball club and ran youth clinics for Boston Area Youth Volleyball. 

In the winter of 2021 Ted left his role at BC and began working part time at Beach House Boston, an indoor beach volleyball facility, in Natick, MA. After a few months Ted was promoted as a program director and facility supervisor running both young and adult volleyball clinics.

August 2022 Ted was hired as The Cambridge School of Westons Head Varsity Volleyball Coach. Within two years of Ted’s leadership the program has grown double in size and the varsity team earned a berth in the 2023 NEPSAC postseason tournament for the first time in school history.

My coaching philosophy centers on mastering the fundamentals and achieving consistent progress. I emphasize that each player should focus on analyzing their unique playing style rather than comparing themselves to others. Growth is a daily pursuit, and I encourage my players to aim for 1% improvement each day. While transformation doesn’t happen overnight, the compounded effort over time leads to significant, lasting results. It’s not about instant change, but about staying consistent and gradually building confidence, skills, and resilience. In the long term, when players take the time to reflect, they’ll see the tremendous growth they’ve achieved through sustained effort.

Sports have always been a part of his life, with a primary background in baseball and volleyball. David played two years of varsity volleyball at Burncoat High School in Worcester. After high school, David attended Boston College on an Air Force ROTC and academic scholarship, where he pursued a degree in Film Studies. During his time at Boston College, David volunteered at the West End Boys and Girls Club, serving as a Fitness and Nutrition coach and coaching their Little League baseball team for a year.

Currently, He works full-time as the Director of Studio for the MarTech company BlueConic, while also running his own video marketing agency, Happy Lam Media. In 2023, David joined The Cambridge School of Weston as an Assistant Coach for the Girls Varsity Volleyball team. David is returning for his second year, continuing to focus on developing the fundamentals while leveraging his video expertise to help players analyze and improve their performance through studying game film.
