Seung Hyun entered CSW as a tenth grader. While here, he ran cross-country, played Ultimate, started a computer science club, and was a lead programmer in the robotics club. He designed an independent study exploring the applications of linear algebra to differential equations, and he also served as a Teaching Assistant for Cell Biology. He still keeps in touch with members of his advisory group!
At CSW, students have a lot of ownership over their education. How did that impact you at CSW and afterward?
At CSW, I was able to dive into my passion for math and science through classes, being a teaching assistant, and designing an independent study. I participated in the American Mathematics Competition and placed 7th out of competitors from 25 countries. I also started a computer science club and joined the robotics team, and all of these experiences led me to feel confident reaching out to robotics companies to try to set up a gap year internship experience. I had been away from my family since middle school, so wanted to be able to spend some time at home with them before starting college in the US. Because of the work I had done, I was offered an internship in South Korea in the artificial intelligence lab at Bonavision, Inc., where I worked to create algorithms that would help a robot respond to commands in natural sentence structures in both English and Korean. After my gap year, I began college at The University of Rochester, studying biomedical engineering, mathematics, and physics. Recently, I have worked at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics on campus, where I developed a mathematical function necessary to optimize electrical circuit designs used in space, which will be used for a US Department of Defence project.
How did you feel CSW prepared you for college?
In addition to the course content I learned, one of the ways CSW really helped prepare me for college was by teaching me to have the courage to ask questions, and the resourcefulness to autonomously find answers when you don’t understand something. In order to be successful at my college, you need to be able to figure out what you don’t know and how to find answers, which CSW prepared me for.
What advice would you want to give to future international students at CSW?
CSW is not like other high schools, where you simply study and take classes and graduate. At CSW, you will live, imagine your future, and act on it. So if you have a dream to follow, CSW is the right school for you.
Grad Year: 2014
