CSW Celebrates Latinx Heritage Month

In observance of Latinx Heritage Month, September 15-October 15, members of CSW's Sociedad Latinx recently hosted an educational celebration at all-school assembly. Students shared the history of the Nuyorican Movement and read poems by Latinx poets who identify as Nuyorican (Puerto Ricans from New York.) These poems speak to a bit of Latinx history as well as to experiences of identity.

Mimi Clemente'20 read "Not Tonight but Tomorrow," by Miguel Algarín; Vicky Cojab'21 recited "Two-Headed Puerto Rican" by Magdalena Gómez; Valeria Chavez'22 read "AmeRícan" by Tato Laviera; Jalen Holmes'20 read "My Mother's Suitcase," by Nancy Mercado; and Emma Clayton'20 read "Ode to Grasshopper" by Pedro Pietri.

CSW—a gender-inclusive day and boarding school for grades 9-12—is a national leader in progressive education. We live out our values of inquiry-based learning, student agency, and embracing diverse perspectives in every aspect of our student experience. Young people come to CSW to learn how to learn and then put what they learn into action—essential skills they carry into their futures as doers, makers, innovators, leaders, and exceptional humans who do meaningful work in the world.
