The boarding students celebrated the first weekend of the school year by participating in a variety of activities aimed at building a strong community on campus.
On Friday evening mentalist Brian Imbus left a crowd of 200 mesmerized by his ability to read the minds of the audience. Comments after the show ranged from "that was so creepy – how did he do it"? to "That was best the show I have attended in my four years at CSW. Can he come back again before I graduate?" The post show ice cream social allowed students to rehash the show, play some games and make some new friends.
Saturday, Mother Nature helped set the scene for some spectacular outdoor activities. New boarders joined the new day for a day of team building and stepping outside ones comfort zone on the high ropes course. Returning boarders ventured out to Cochituate Park for a morning of canoeing and kayaking. Although one canoe managed to capsize, another boat was able to assist in a water rescue and besides a few wet cell phones there was no damage to report – the accident is still under investigation by Mark Santa-Maria, the dorm associate from Aleph, who happened to be on board the disabled canoe.
After lunch the returning boarders created a gift for the new boarders that would be presented later in the weekend. Upon returning to campus students had a short time to recharge their batteries before being swept off to Kimball Farm for a barbeque dinner, ice cream sundae party and unlimited miniature golf, bumper-boats, golf at the driving range or the nine-hole pitch and putt and a whole lot more.
Sunday morning the dorm leaders took control and ran their version of "speed dating" to allow each boarding student a chance to talk to one another. The energy was high and the smiles and laughter filled the room. After a quick game of cops and robbers (a version of tag), the student had some much needed time off for the afternoon prior to our first family style dinner.
The weekend concluded with a wonderful dinner followed by fractured fairy tales – and annual tradition where each dorm performs a skit based on themes that dorm parents have thoughtfully planned. Although all the skits were creative and fun, the boys from White Farm were declared the winners.
