The Cambridge School of Weston boys’ varsity soccer team beat Brimmer and May School, 2-1, in the final game of the Massachusetts Bay Independent League championships on Monday.

In cold rain, playing on opponent’s turf, the Gryphons pulled together to bring home their first league title since 2001.

“This win says a lot about the character of the boys,” said Robbie MacDonald, head coach. “They played their hearts out. They didn’t get wrapped up in the things that could go wrong, but focused on what they had to do and they did it.”

Eli Scribner-Moore ’13 scored the first goal with an assist from Tony Kim ’12. Just before half time, Noah Rossen ’14 scored the winning goal, with an assist from Alex Egilman ’11. Goalie Max McGleughlin ’13 and the team’s defense worked hard in the second half of the game to keep Brimmer and May from scoring and maintain their lead.

Robin Plimpton-Magee, assistant coach, attributed the win to team effort, as well as the experience and leadership of the seniors on the team.

The team is expected to head to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council tournament in coming weeks.
