Boys' Tennis Wins in Thrilling Fashion vs. Brimmer

In thrilling fashion, the CSW Boys' Varsity Tennis squad upended rival Brimmer and May on a windswept Friday afternoon, improving their unblemished Spring 2015 record to 3 victories and 0 losses.

Gann Academy in Waltham was the site for a shockingly autumnal attack of perilous wind throughout the afternoon. The blustery conditions provided quite the stark ambience for the CSW Boys and beloved spectators.

In the Number One Singles match, senior yeoman Sam Hoenig '15 decimated his well heralded sophomore opponent in surprisingly quick fashion, 8-0. In an exclusive interview, the senior expressed his satisfaction with his caliber of play, especially in his serve and volley game. "I felt as though I played some of my most impressive tennis of this young season." Spectators and well wishers of CSW Tennis can only hope that Hoenig continues his compelling mastery over his tennis adversaries. Despite, or perhaps because of the vociferous winds, Mr. Hoenig's backhand slice gave his opponent nothing but "fits and dizzy spells," to borrow a phrase from raconteur Mr. Andrew Bird.

In the Number Two Singles match, freshman Leaf Fagerberg '18 continued to play as though he is an upperclassman, keeping his poise in a nail biting, grey hair inducing, splendid 8-6 dethroning of an incredibly determined Brimmer and May upperclassman. Trailing at various points in the pro-set, Fagerberg's concentration never wilted, displaying an impressive array of approach shots and gorgeous looking slices that garnered angles rarely seen this year at this level of play. Fagerberg won in dramatic fashion, 8-6.

In the Number Three Singles match, sophomore Sam Rueter '17 played a truly admirable match, just coming within a few points shy of victory, falling 6-8. Sam dealt with a bevy of difficult lobs and a rather fast opponent, and is to be commended for giving a heroic effort on the tennis court Friday afternoon. Throughout the day, Sam pierced his opponent with classic, textbook two-handed backhands which were simply visual gems. Rueter is certainly poised to defeat this Brimmer and May opponent the next time these two squads convene in three weeks.

In the Number One Doubles Match, Josh Rueter '17 and Nolan DeMott '16 combined forces yet again to earn a diligently fought 8-3 victory. DeMott and Rueter were brilliant at net and with their baseline play, displaying ease and making their win look rather natural. DeMott and Rueter continue to play with a great deal of confidence, and both are improving their serves immensely.

In the Number Two Doubles Match, Garrett Stokes '16 and Harry Klein '18 played yet another thrilling doubles match. The nearly epic match featured several lead changes, and did not end until after 6:00 p.m. Stokes and Klein battled like the venerable doubles team they are, but unfortunately just missed the land of victory, with the final tally of 6-8.

In an Exhibition match, the always energetic Chad Valpey '17 won handily, 6-1. Chad used great footwork and smart tennis plays (including very good ball placement) to his advantage throughout the day.
