Ultimate A-team Shines in Win over Gann Academy

The Ultimate Frisbee A-team traveled to Gann Academy on Monday, May 19 for a much anticipated match-up against the second place squad.

Uruk-Hai was missing more than six players coming into the game, with a few veteran players recovering from injuries and one or two out sick. Despite the short sideline and the massive Gann Academy home field crowd, CSW came out strong and was determined to set the tone early.

The two teams traded points for the first seven points of the game. Gann had success working the disc to their handlers in quick give-and-go fashion, relying on late deep cuts for quick scores. Meanwhile, CSW worked their H-stack and Vertical stack on offense, making hard cuts and not shying away from the deep game. Senior cutting threat Will Kwiatkowski '15 had a great first half, recording two goals and bringing constant energy to the line.

Uruk-Hai finished the first half on top by a score of 8-6. In the second half, the team did not let up. The two standout stars from this game were handler co-captain Jacob Arons '15 and handler/cutter Aidan FitzGerald '17.

Jacob recorded 8 assists and 3 goals in the game. One of his assists came on a "Greatest" play, which is an extremely rare feat in the game of Ultimate. An upfield throw started to drift out of bounds for CSW. That is when Jacob jumped from inbounds, caught the disc in mid-air, and released it back in-bounds before touching the ground. The disc was then caught for an upwind score by Henry Sieber '18. The CSW sideline erupted in joy as Jacob and his team celebrated the amazing play.

Aidan's role in the game was monumental. He recorded 3 assists and 3 goals and was active on both the defensive and offensive fronts. Jacon and Aidan's offensive teamwork was a thing of beauty.

Another standout in the game was CSW cutting veteran Liam Kaufer '16. Liam had 4 timely goals, making some spectacular catches in the process and securing the disc with two strong hands.

CSW ended up running away in the second half, winning the game by a count of 15-10. Next up for Uruk-Hai is Commonwealth School in Boston on Wednesday.
