CSW Boys' Tennis Gains First Ever MBIL Championship!

A veritable landmark was passed on Wednesday, May 20th, as the CSW Boys' Varsity Tennis team earned their first ever Massachusetts Bay International League Championship, by handily defeating Gann Academy by a tally of 4-1.

Battling capricious winds, and a raucous crowd in Waltham, the Gryphons persevered and retained their unblemished season record. The CSW Boys, squaring off against only one more opponent next week at Boston University Academy, move to a 12-0 mark, earning tennis immortality at CSW. The dethroning of five consecutive time MBIL champion Gann was defined by characteristic CSW perseverance, collaboration, and intensely disciplined, comprehensive efforts from all members of the team.

In the Number One Singles contest, Sam "The Future Blue and Gold Mule" Hoenig '15 solidified his bona fides as the 2015 MBIL Most Valuable Player in an 8-1 defeat of his opponent. Hoenig was not content to drift through this contest, as he lassoed incredibly impressive lobs from Gann throughout the afternoon. The Gann opponent was a worthy opponent, but the senior Captain from Lincoln was determined to gain his first ever championship for CSW in four spectacular years, which are coming to a screeching (and bittersweet) end for the young Hoenig.

In a match which provided more excitement than either team could have expected, freshman Leaf Fagerberg '18 once again represented Manhattan and CSW admirably, punching through to a hair-raising 8-4 triumph in Number Two Singles action. Not to be outdone by his opponent's foot speed and admirable service returns, Fagerberg pummeled his rival from Gann from the baseline and the net, taking every slight opening and making Gann rue their reliance on the wind for contingency plans. Fagerberg maintained his own unimpeachable record this Spring for CSW.

In Number Three Singles, Sam Rueter '17 yet again exhibited resolve after trailing in the early stages of the match. As he did in various matches throughout the season, Rueter was trailing 1-2, before turning in seven consecutive victories, ending the match with a nearly perfect overhead smash, locking up an 8-2 win. Rueter glided smoothly over the backcourt and towards the net in the denouement of the match, wowing fans and coaches alike.

In the Number One Doubles match, Josh Rueter '17 and Nolan DeMott '16 fought through various deuce points, brutal wind, and less than amiable spectators in Waltham, earning an 8-4 victory. Despite the wind, and elements, Team Rueter/DeMott were particularly motivated throughout the day, even when their adversaries seemed to be garnering sufficient momentum. Both Rueter and DeMott displayed some of their finest serving of the 2015 campaign.

In the Number Two Doubles match, Harry Klein '18 and Garrett Stokes '16 played their characteristically enigmatic tennis, including a point in which Harry Klein placed a perfect lob scarcely over the Gann net, which the CSW team gleefully witnessed bounce back onto CSW territory thanks to shocking spin, and potent winds. Despite the fortuitous winds during the aforementioned point, Team Klein/Stokes came up a trifle short, succumbing 4-8 in wonderfully entertaining doubles play.
