Lise's Lens: January 26, 2023

Lise reflects on changemakers in classical music, considers small decisions with big sustainability impact, celebrates Rock/{Pop and thinks about what it means to be part of a creative community.

WHAT I’M READING
  • Thanks to faculty member Alison Safford for sharing this great Washington Post piece*: on a “new class of artists … changing the sound of classical music”. I’m especially excited about the BSO’s (that would be BALTIMORE Symphony Orchestra’s) new conductor, 30-year-old Jonathon Heyward, slated to follow the amazing Marin Alsop. I’m also thrilled to see CSW alum Kari Watson on the list! *Note: you may need to create a free account to read the article.

WHAT I’M THINKING/TALKING ABOUT
  • For the CSW community, sustainability has become an increasingly important consideration… from large choices to small decisions. Tetsuya Tanaka '24 (co-head of our Sustainability Committee) recently shared some interesting facts about the impact of font choice on the environment (and on our print costs!). For instance, Consumer Reports ran a test and found that by switching from Arial to Times New Roman they could get 27% percent more use from an ink cartridge. Want to learn more about efficient fonts? Here’s a quick article with options.

WHAT I'M LISTENING TO
  • Steely Dan, of course! Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of last week’s Rock/Pop Concert. It was wonderful seeing so many of you enjoying this high-energy event! If you were not able to attend live, we hope you can join us at next week’s online watch party: Tuesday, January 31, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE
  • As each mod wraps up, I love seeing preparations for the End of Mod Show. This week, I was struck by what a gift it is to be learning, working, and living in a creative community. Every six weeks, we take a collective breath and explore new demonstrations of creative thinking and expression—I can’t think of many other places where that happens!

CSW—a gender-inclusive day and boarding school for grades 9-12—is a national leader in progressive education. We live out our values of inquiry-based learning, student agency, and embracing diverse perspectives in every aspect of our student experience. Young people come to CSW to learn how to learn and then put what they learn into action—essential skills they carry into their futures as doers, makers, innovators, leaders, and exceptional humans who do meaningful work in the world.
